Playful, Happy, Energetic, Smart, Snuggly, Loving
Vaccinations up to date, spayed / neutered, special needs. Patches has some guarding issues with his toys. He's come a long, long way, and is doing great but he will need his forever home to be patient while he builds trust with them and then he will not feel the need to guard.
Other dogs, cats, children.
Patches and adorable 18 month old Boxer mix pup who will keep you on your toes and teach you to enjoy life! Patches spent his formative years in a shelter and is now in a loving foster home getting the structure, care and love that he deserved all along. Patches has been working on obedience training and some negative behaviors he picked up after feeling insecure and scared from his past life. He's a very happy and loving boy and he needs a loving forever home who understands that the best diamonds are found after you shine them up! Patches is seeking an adult home as the only pet in the home and he'd be a wonderful addition for someone looking for an exercise buddy and true companion. He's affectionate and sweet and just a big ol' puppy! He weighs approximately 65 lbs and is what is considered a medium sized dog. Patches is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, heart worm negative and house and crate trained.
Child appropriate? Patches would do fine with older children who can be respectful of his boundaries. Children 15 and older would be appropriate.
Other dog appropriate? At this time, Patches needs to work on his dog skills as he's too excitable and reacts too strongly, turning other dogs off. With more training and attention, he may be able to play with dogs of a similar size and how enjoy a more rambunctious play style.
Cat appropriate? We do not believe that Patches would do well with cats.
How is he with strangers? Patches is very excited to meet new people and gets a bit exuberant and jumpy. He needs to work on remaining calm when meeting new people. At the shelter he showed some mild apprehension with new males but since being in a foster home has met males and done fine.
What is his play style? Patches can get overexcited when he becomes overstimulated so keeping play time at a lower level is important for him. He's very much a large puppy and because of this is brain goes from speed 1 to 20 in a second then he can become jumpy. He loves to play ball in the back yard and get physical activity from walks/runs but roughhousing with him would not be acceptable.
Does he like toys? Patches LOVES his toys! He is a bit protective of them and has shown some toy guarding and because of this he has structured time with his toys until he learns that sharing is not scary. His favorite toys are his jolly ball for outside and hard Nylabone type bones inside.
Does he like water? He really enjoys water! He likes playing in a kiddie pool and romping in streams, as long as he's leashed.
Does he like car rides? Patches rides fine in the car.
Exercise level needed? Patches needs a good amount of daily exercise. He is not a dog for a couch potato. Because he is young and active he needs at the minimum a daily walk for around 30 minutes, jogging would be great for him, and throwing the jolly ball around the back yard will help get energy out as well. When he does not have an adequate outlet for his energy, he can chew on things and be destructive in the home like many young dogs.
Behavior issues? Patches has exhibited resource guarding of objects he believes are his. For example, this has been witnessed with his toys, a stick and occasionally a plastic food bowl. He has improved significantly and with training and ongoing attention he may grow out of this issue; however, it needs to be taken seriously. He rarely has any incidents in his foster home now as he has structure and routine and his foster understands proper handling when it comes to these items. Patches can also be very excited at times and needs structure and reminders to be polite and not jump or grab items but these are very much improving as he continues his puppy training.
Medical issues? Patches has no known medical issues.
Skills? Patches knows how to sit and is working on “wait” before going in and out of doorways and remaining in one spot until released, "down", which is laying down, and "place" which is going to his bed. He is very, very smart and very eager to please so he's been learning very fast and we feel confident the more training and consistency he gets, the faster he'll learn.
Special/endearing things? Patches is a super sweet young dog who absolutely loves love. He loves cuddling and snuggling on the couch and loves belly rubs. He very much wants to be with his person or people and makes a really great companion. His favorite thing is to lay on the couch watching tv and get pets and attention. He's very attentive and follows his foster caregiver wherever she goes. He simply loves people. Patches still has all that sweet puppiness that people love and he's incredibly trainable. He did not have a good start to life and so he's had to learn to trust people and learn what is expected of him and he's drinking up every drop. He loves going on walks and exploring the world and would make a great hiking partner. He's also not hard on the eyes, lol! He's quite the handsome boy!
Ideal home? Patches' ideal home would be with an adult caregiver or a couple who can give him the time, attention and training he needs. An home with active people would be helpful as getting him out and exercised is critical for meeting his needs. He really loves being around people so a home where the adults are home often is best vs. a home where he'd be left alone a lot. The ideal home would be people who are open to working with him and continuing his training so that he can become the best version of himself. Patience is needed with Patches and people who do not have the time to continue his training would not be a good fit. Patches needs a caregiver who can understand that he is not perfect and who will give him time to settle in, provide structure for him, continue his positive based training and treat him like a true family member. ?
*Patches comes with several free, in-home training sessions to help him and his new family bond.
